hopefully i'll be updating more here, with news on dissertation-y type stuff.
last year, i wrote this playlist on slice.ca which was very similar to my bliss mix, but the bliss mix is more about being centred than being inspired. anyway! i'm babbling now.
mattalike - zaki ibrahim
it's like... the best song for when you're feeling frantic. "the only time i feel lost is when i'm looking for something outside that i don't need." and "connected to all matta like oxygen atoms i wanna breathe you in so you can show me what you're made of"
green light - jamie lidell
ahh, love jamie lidell. he's one of my favourite interviews. i just like it when people take the piss, as it were. see? i'm seriously english. "it's only a trick if you make it a trick / it's only a good thing if you make it a good thing / well you're spinning your wheels but you're going nowhere"
the middle - jimmy eat world
i already referenced it in the above playlist. unless i'm about to commit suicide, this song can cheer me up out of any terrible situation."live right now, just be yourself, doesn't matter if it's good enough for someone else"
what i got - sublime
ska-y songs are usually quite happy, aren't they? my brother's (and my) friend rick plays this on guitar and i sing it. aw. i miss that. it's so good. it's making me want to get into my old 311, too! ha. "life's what i got what's within my reach. it all comes back to you, you get what you deserve, try to test that, you're bound to get served" i also like the part about his mom hitting the rock. classic.
reckonerz - amplive
this one's a little weird and i didn't LOVE love this remix of in rainbows, but the lyrics are really good. "who you trying to please anyway? i hope it ain't a man cause he's just as imperfect as you"
get by - talib kweli
this is one of my favourite songs ever. it's so fucking good. i can't even write about it. just listen to it. the whole thing is just right.
time has told me - nick drake
this is a good one. i think elton john even covered it when it came out. "i'll leave the ways that are making me be what i really don't want to be, leave the ways that are making me love what i really don't want to love."
that is all i can remember right now, sadly. i know there were more on there, but i'm operating from memory and my memory is awful. i can barely remember my own name at times. anyway. there you go.
i probably already did this one a million times, but whatevs. love it!

imagine if society was musicless? it'd absolutely suck. it's interesting how all cultures have music and rely on it to fill silences, to help celebrate, to dance to, to cry to, to laugh to, et cetera.
on vacation, i met a piano player named fidelio. i felt sort of sorry for him, overweight and drunk, taking requests from middle-aged women for sweet caroline five times a night. but after they left, i sat there in my green dress, drinking a grapefruit martini and he played all the songs i requested that he knew. (he didn't know any NIN.) sometimes he'd play something and change the words (lady in a green dress) to suit me. was i sad that he was trying to get with me? not really, he chose the fate of singalong pianist on a cruise ship. it was flattering.
then i thought about how i never listen to any live blues. that's my goal, this year. to go to a place where some dude at a piano plays fucking bb king and nina simone. something SOULFUL. not that i don't enjoy a good pop tune.
at the club with the young people, we listened to some top forty from a few weeks ago (i guess it's hard to get new stuff on a floating vessel) and i now have fond memories of my love, which to be honest, i didn't really care about before. now it makes me happy. i love when you hear a song and associate with an event. that's the best. so, for your visual and audial pleasure ... click on JT.
the first time i saw him was in 99 (kool haus) and no one would go with me, so i went by myself. definitely one of the more memorable experiences of that year for me. train opened (VOMIT) and so many people around me were smoking the green that i accidentally got high. (just a little bit.) then at the end, he brought SNOW out to perform "informer" with him and it was amazing.
i went again in 01 (the phoenix) and again was amazed with the great bf. his piano playing and the general feeling in the crowd is great. he really plays to the audience and you can tell he's having a great time.
the last time i saw him was 06 - again, amazing. i think the greatest part about seeing him live is the audience participation. it's never corny or awkward. he gets the audience to sing backup harmonies and it's really quite beautiful and powerful. you have to be there to understand. the above track sort of gives you an idea of how the shows go.

can someone please give me a million dollars so i can go to all these shows? i already have tickets to the kooks and the blow... i just need to be at two places at once on may 8th and some donations to the tune of like $200.
but seriously, if you wanna go to a show with me and any of those interest you, let me know... i missed some because i'm on vacation the week of march 11-17...
who doesn't enjoy something a little less than musically acceptable from time to time? oh cmon, like you don't own a copy of dance hit '93. YES YOU DO. LIAR. anywho. i know that i indulge in crap here and there. at least i'm HONEST. geez. that's right, beyonce, timberlake, sugababes, that's nothin. robbie williams? the man covers sinatra for god's sake. nothing to be ashamed of. but there is some stuff i am ashamed of. mostly because it's actually not ironic nor is it good. these are my... DUM DUM DUMMM... guilty pleasures.
aww. matchbox twenty. my most embarrassing musical indulgence thusfar. i mean, i can't be held accountable for music i enjoyed before the age of 16, but this shit is like... still liked by me. i'm not crazy, i'm just a little unwell! ohh gawwwd, it's bad. and don't you just want to punch rob thomas in the eye? he's such a douche-us. but still, for some weird reason, i like a lot of his shit. sorry, man. can't help it. IT"S CATCHY FOR PETE'S SAKE.
oh, my sweet dixie chicks. they're so cute! and adorable! and special! they hate dubya (who doesn't? oh right, all those weird american folk who voted for him - crazy christians) AND they write catchy new country. wowzas. and natalie maines can sing - you can't deny it. this song, goodbye earl, is pretty countryish, which i don't like, but me first and the gimme gimmes did a really good cover of it! awww dixie chicks. such a soft spot in my heart for them. they're pro-girl and pro "taking the long road." AWW
no one doesn't like this song. if you say you don't like this song, you're a liar. like henry rollins says, YOU"RE A LIAR!! and i really like the short film in this clip. it shows how painful love can be. and you deserve more! yes you DO. stupid carnie, with her gastric bypass
NOW! go forth and share your guilty pleasures. if you dare, you cowards!!
my dad is part of a motorcycle group called yids on wheels. really, dad?
today's feel good music is as follows:
parentheses by the blow
if something in the deli aisle makes you cry
of course i'll put my arm around you and walk you outside
why would i mind?
you're not a baby if you feel the world
all the babies feel the world, that's why they cry
LOVE THAT SONG. check it!!!
and
things are getting better by N*E*R*D
sometimes you gotta know where you are in your life in order to feel good
and i feel good
she says she likes me she needs me she wants to see me
cause i'm the shit
how do you feel? i feel good
enough. said.
