when i was in high school, i had two favourite bands: radiohead and weezer. one of my favourite songs is say it ain't so... they're just a great band. they came out with some duds after pinkerton (which was incredibly undervalued for what it was when it came out) but they're still a very important band.
they're still clever and i was pleased to see this cover of kids/pokerface from the band. take a look at let me know what you think.
who doesn't love the song wild horses? uhh... assholes, that's who. it's definitely one of the best rolling stones songs out there. i love paint it black, i like you can't always get what you want and satisfaction (i can't get no) is also quite the ditty. but wild horses... it's one of those songs that finds your middle, your insides and speaks to raw emotion that you can't quite control. it's fucking amazing. which, of course, is why so many people cover it. and i found a bloggy blog post that references a million and two wild horses covers. so please please please check it out for your own sake. a personal favourite is the sundays' version.
and since we're being serious music people today, i thought i'd suggest this amazing song: a lady of a certain age by the divine comedy. i admittedly know very little about this band, but the lyrics are just awesome. so on point, the band does a great job at storytelling. check it out, dudes, you won't hate it, i promise.
the most depressing song is gloomy sunday - written in 1933 by some hungarian pianist dude. you can read the full history of the song at wikipedia. all i know is that i was introduced to this incredibly beautiful song by trying to download some bjork songs off napster like 8 years ago and randomly finding it. the song is just so delicate and fragile. it basically describes one person's thought process before she commits suicide.
it is best known for its billie holiday cover, but other female artists like bjork and sarah mclachlan have hit the song dead-on as well. i wish i had the sarah version, but alas, i do not. you can find it on youtube if you so desire.
