here's a cute little vid of one of my favourite girl crushes, zooey deschanel, dancing with the elfish joseph gordon levitt, to her track with m ward (why do you let me stay here). i quite like the vid, she's super cute.

radiohead's been quite prolific lately, too. aside from that overrated harry patch song that came out last week, i'm quite attached to thom's performance of his new song, the present tense. reminds me of other rh acoustic stuff that came out after ok computer. good acoustic stuff that may have been a little sullied by overproduction. i know, i know, blasphemy. but this song is pure and great. take a listen.

rip: a remix manifesto

i've been busy lately with my dissertation, which is all about digital media and music and the way that the two interact. i've been researching stuff like last.fm, spotify, itunes, thepiratebay.org and all that stuff. one of the best things i've found hands down is this doc by a montreal dude about the whole copyright/copyleft digital revolution and whatnot. it's amazing how director brett gaylor is able to capture the moment in his exciting and entertaining documentary. you should really take a look. the film features girl talk a lot and it's just an all around interesting topic. hope my doc can be half as interesting.

hopefully i'll be updating more here, with news on dissertation-y type stuff.

when i was in high school, i had two favourite bands: radiohead and weezer. one of my favourite songs is say it ain't so... they're just a great band. they came out with some duds after pinkerton (which was incredibly undervalued for what it was when it came out) but they're still a very important band.

they're still clever and i was pleased to see this cover of kids/pokerface from the band. take a look at let me know what you think.

i know what you're all thinking, two posts in a day AND country music ?? score! and you're right, it's a stellar day. my overactive mind is trying to digest all these crazy thoughts uni has stuck in my head. so many news things to contend with! so, to wind down, i've obviously been listening to fem-rock! woo.

miranda lambert is a country singer, which means that i should not know who she is. but i found this song on a paste music sampler last year and it's FRESH, dude. soo soo good. in the tradition of goodbye, earl by the dixie chicks but really truly good musically. check it. respect it. i love her! it's called gunpowder and lead. i can't embed the video, so check it out here.

surely i had to include the song to which i referred above... i prefer the me first and the gimme gimmes version, though.

i just spent my lunch break writing quite a long post about how the war in israel/palestine should stop and it was deleted. sigh.

anyway. here are two pictures from my trip to tel aviv a year and a half ago that show that many of the youth in israel do not support their army though they are forced to join it for several years of their youth and fight a useless neverending war that will never be won.

basically, what i want to say is this: my grandparents were in concentration camps and my great grandparents were brutally tortured and murdered because of their religion. that should teach me, of all people, the value of fairness, the value of peace and pacifism and the value in ending worldly conflict that has roots in no real solutions, only more pain and suffering not only for the people any of us are at war with, but for ourselves and our families. that should teach me to rise above hatred and stupidity and blindness to find what's real: that we are all connected, we are all the same, we're all beautiful and stupid and selfish and human.

i don't believe in romanticized homelands. i don't believe in nationalism. politicians are liars. what are you trying to control? i don't believe in fake wars that have nothing to do with things they purport to be about. we are all from africa. before that, stardust.

what a waste of stardust.

LONDONIUM UPDATE!

Hello, friends and foes! i know my foes read this blog to keep tabs on me, that's why i'm saying hi to them. actually, if anyone does happen upon this blog, please leave a comment so i know who reads it. then i will write entries with my audience in mind! of course, my enemies won't leave a comment since they're trying to keep tabs and therefore don't want me to know that they're SPYING. I'M WISE TO YOUR GAMES, SPIES!

admittedly i've gone slightly batty because i've been working like fucking crazy trying to write 12,000 words of brilliance. so far, i've written 4000 words and the only ones of those that are brilliant are ones that i've quoted from scholars gilroy, adorno and kanye west. i am currently learning that kanye west is so much more deep than anyone could ever know. and despite his loveability, snoop dogg is a terrible, awful man.

so i didn't do as much work as i should have, but only because there isn't enough time!

in other news, i've included some fun pics of friends on the side there. first is krystin with her italian roomies, roberto and lorenzo. so cute! cutesters. i spent christmas with krystin and roberto and krystin's neighbours, who are mexican. it was a really nice time. i was so glad to spend it with them. for serious.

the second pic is my friend daphne, who is a classicly awesome person. like the kind of person that restores your faith in humanity. like the kind of person where you're like, i don't think humankind can be innately evil because of my association with this one person. sometimes we go to a pub to play connect four.

the bottom pic features two of my roomies at our christmas dinner, which was a few weeks ago. they are meher and andrea, two lovely awesome people. missing is maria, who cooked our entire meal... i didn't get any pics of her! dammit! anyway, it's been a great month full of holiday cheer.

the last week has been spent in cafes with maria reading and reading and reading for our essays. the toad's mouth, which is the closest cafe to us, is the best! they love us there! i think. it's like our whatever the cafe on friends was called.it's great. thank god, cause i still live in this awful residence. boo to that!

work is going well, just trying to keep it all together. the economy is scary. let's not talk about it!

i can't believe i've already survived a semester here! it's crazy. only 9 months left and it makes me kind of sad. i LOVE school. it's such a nice haven from the unpleasant real world. anywho. more pics can be seen on my facebook page.

the rumour is that the faux english singer in japanese cartoon is lupe fiasco - though their myspace page denies it. not sure either way, but it's fun despite its fake english accent, which is kind of a notch better than when i do an english accent. which is to say, it pretty much sucks. why can't they just sing in their own accents?

i'm writing this essay on black hip hop (like, not eminem, ha) and basically arguing that it's failing at the moment at staying true to its political roots. queen latifah is such a prime example. i wasn't even aware of the drivel that she was releasing lately until right now. oh GOD! it's awful. she used to write such empowering, important music and rap just swallowed her up. well, society swallowed rap up and it forced all the hip hoppers/rappers to submit and conform.
